Winter is the perfect time to snuggle up with a pile of great books, isn't it! I've compiled a few of my old favorites and a few new ones too that I think you and your children might enjoy.

Annie and the Wild Animals by Jan Brett

1. Annie and the Wild Animals by Jan Brett

If you love Jan Brett's books, then you'll love this sweet story about a little girl called Annie who's missing her cat and ends up feeding the wild animals that are all hungry in the winter. There's a lovely surprise at the end.

Brave Irene by William Steig

2. Brave Irene by William Steig

This is a fantastic story about perseverance and determination, as the main character Irene sets out to deliver a special package in the middle of a winter storm.

Fox's Garden by Princesse Camcam

3. Fox's Garden by Princesse Camcam

This one is something a little different for winter as the story is told through beautiful pictures which are so captivating to look at as the story unfolds between a fox and a young boy.

The Happy Day by Ruth Krauss

4. The Happy Day by Ruth Krauss

"The Happy Day" is one of the most delightful winter reads full of excited animal characters who desperately wait for spring to arrive. I just love the ending for this one.

I Walk with Vanessa by Kerascoet

5. I Walk with Vanessa by Kerascoet

This book isn't exactly a winter story, but the illustrations are so wintry with the background scenes looking like they're all covered in snow, while the main characters are in color.

The special thing about this book is the focus on kindness and inclusion, so while you're cozying up with winter books, this one will be inspiring kindness.

If Winter Comes, Tell It I'm Not Here by Simona Ciraolo

6. If Winter Comes, Tell It I'm Not Here by Simona Ciraolo

This is a fun new book that I came across that's great for the start of winter, but just as good in the middle of it too. I love that there's a sibling relationship, and that the main character's perspective changes as winter comes.

I think we all relate to dreading winter a little, but then when it comes, we realize there are so many nice things about it.

Katy and the Big Snow by Virginia Lee Burton

7. Katy and the Big Snow by Virginia Lee Burton

I'm a big fan of Virginia Lee Burton's books. They were written a long time ago now, but children today still love all the detailed drawings and the story of small characters that do big things, and inanimate objects having personalities.

This book is a fabulous story about Katy, the snow plow, who comes to the rescue on a winter day.

Penguin Huddle by Ross Montgomery

8. Penguin Huddle by Ross Montgomery

"Penguin Huddle" is a light-hearted fun read, about some penguins who get themselves into a bit of a pickle. The cool thing is, they all work together to get out of it, so it's a great focus on teamwork and friendship.

The illustrations are fantastic too and so full of humor.

Snowy Nap by Jan Brett

9. Snowy Nap by Jan Brett

If it's by Jan Brett, then it's going to be a hit. Here's another cute book by her about a delightful hedgehog called Hedgie. Jan Brett always comes up with the most adorable names for her characters, and in this story Hedgie experiences all the delights of winter before tucking in for a long nap.

You've probably read her book "The Mitten", so you'll know her gorgeous illustrations and sweet style of storytelling.

The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats

10. The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats

This book is a classic and is brilliant for children experiencing snow for the first time as the main character finds wonder in every thing that makes snow amazing.

Kids will completely relate to his imaginative ideas and curiosity.

Well, I hope those books will keep you and your children entertained during the long, cold days of winter.
